Vacation bound! Tennessee, here we come!

I have made some wonderful trips this summer, and this one is special because we have Daddy along--he is finally getting a break from his hectic summer schedule. Today we drove four hours on scenic route 81, heading southwest. At different times of the trip there were scenic mountain ranges on both sides. Today's destination: Roanoke, VA, halfway to the Smoky Mountains and Gatlinburg, our final destination. It was a great drive, and though we left our house at noon with the intent of me sleeping most of the way, I think I was just too excited to nap. Roanoke is great small city.

Tonight we enjoyed the downtown area and Market Square. We walked down Rail Walk and watched the longest freight train passing through--so cool, especially because you can get very close to the tracks to see (and smell) what is being transported in the variety of train cars. We had a great dinner at a local BBQ place though I literally fell asleep in my plate.

After not napping and lots of jumping on the hotel's beds (because apparently you always have to jump on the hotel beds to test them), I was just a bit tuckered out--one minute I was eating a fry, and the next minute I was slouched in my chair asleep. I rallied (after being coaxed awake) to drive up Mill Mountain to see Roanoke's Star, the world's largest freestanding illuminated man-made star as a closing to our day. It was raining when we arrived at the top but still enjoyed the star and the awesome views of Roanoke and surrounding mountains. Quite a special spot.
