Day Four on Tuesday, August 2, 2011
This morning we got up early to take our first big hike. We drove to the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail,
which was a lovely drive in of itself. About halfway around the loop, we parked at the trailhead for Grotto Falls, a three-mile round trip hike. It was an awesome hike, noted moderate in the guide book, it was a gradual incline with switchbacks and stream crossings, lots of rocks to scramble and exposed tree roots to climb. The reward
at the top was an awesome water fall that we could walk behind and an air temperature of probably 70 degrees. So cool! We stopped and stayed for awhile, having a picnic on a big rock at the base of the waterfall. We eventually made our descent down as the falls got a bit more crowded. For the record, I hiked the entire way! A few times I was carried along some slippery rocks, but I was happy to do it all myself.
I remarked on the way down, "I am a natural." I also did the hike mostly as a race car, changing tires for the different terrains and revving up my engine at an incline. A few times I ran out of gas, but a snack and fill up got me on my way. As we drove away, and finished on the motor trail loop, we saw a bear! See if you can point him out in the picture.
